Prerequisites

Before using the AI Sequence Generator:

  • You have a lemlist account with campaign creation access

  • You know your target audience – Company description, ICP, and ideal job roles

  • You have credits available for lead enrichment (if using email/phone enrichment)

How to Use the AI Sequence Generator

Step 1: Start creating a campaign

Go to Campaigns, then click Create campaign

When prompted, click Create AI campaign

Step 2: Add your company information and review the company description

Fill in your Company name and Website, review (and edit if needed) the AI-generated Main activity, confirm your Location, then click Continue.

Click Continue and wait a few seconds while AI analyzes your company.

Step 3: Select your lead source

Choose where your leads should come from (for example, CSV import, lemlist lookalike finders, LinkedIn, or lemlist people database), then click Continue

If you select Add leads with lemlist lookalike finders, confirm your choice and click Continue

Step 4: Select or edit your ICP

Based on your company data, lemlist suggests several Ideal Customer Profiles (ICPs).

Choose one of the suggested ICPs, or click Edit to customize:

  • Industry

  • Company size

  • Location

  • Pain points

Step 5: Choose personas

Personas are the specific job roles you want to target within your ICP (e.g., Head of Marketing, Sales Development Manager, CEO).

Why personas matter: Instead of generic messages, AI tailors outreach to each role's:

  • Responsibilities

  • Goals

  • Pain points

Select one or more personas to target, then click Continue

Step 6: Review the AI-generated lead list

The Leads review step shows contacts lemlist automatically sourced based on your ICP and persona.

Each lead includes:

  • Name

  • Job title

  • Company

  • Location

You can:

  • Scan the list to verify relevance

  • Remove irrelevant leads

  • Edit entries if needed

When you’re ready, click Continue

This is your first chance to quality-check before enrichment.

Step 7: Enrich leads with contact information

The lead enrichment step automatically finds verified emails and phone numbers.

How it works:

  • Waterfall enrichment system – Checks up to 10 data providers for emails, 4 for phone numbers

  • Email verification – Every email is verified for deliverability

  • Phone validation – Phone numbers are checked for validity and activity

You can choose to enrich:

  • Emails only

  • Emails + phone numbers

  • Skip enrichment (if you already have contact data)

Select your enrichment options, then click Continue

Step 8: Define audience pain points

Select the core challenge your ideal customers are facing, then click Continue

Common pain points:

  • Low email deliverability

  • Lack of personalization at scale

  • Poor campaign tracking

  • Low reply rates

Why this matters: AI tailors your messaging to address this specific problem, making your outreach more relevant and compelling.

Step 9: Choose your value proposition

Define how your product solves the pain point you selected, then click Continue

  • Value proposition: Automated email warm-up gradually increases sending volume and builds positive sender reputation

AI uses this to craft messaging that positions your offer as the solution.

Step 10: Set your copywriting rules

Choose your Tone of voice, confirm the Prospection language, optionally add a Signature, then click Continue

Step 11: Select your outreach strategy

Choose the channels you'll use to contact leads:

Email only:

  • Fast, high-volume prospecting

  • Best for lower-priority contacts or testing

Email + LinkedIn:

  • Adds multichannel engagement

  • Better for mid-value leads

Email + LinkedIn + Phone:

  • Most comprehensive approach

  • Includes warm calls for high-value prospects

Step 12: Review the AI-generated sequence

After a few seconds, your complete AI-generated campaign is ready with:

  • Leads imported

  • Messaging written

  • Multi-step sequence structured

Customize Your AI-Generated Campaign

Once the campaign opens, you have full control to customize:

What you can edit:

In the Sequence:

  • Rearrange step order (drag and drop)

  • Edit messaging in each step

  • Adjust delays between touches

  • Add new steps (middle or end of sequence)

  • Remove steps you don't need

In the Leads section:

  • Review imported leads

  • See pre-filled variables (firstName, jobTitle, companyName, etc.)

  • Add or remove leads

  • Edit lead data

Launch Your Campaign

Once everything looks good, click Go to my campaign to open the generated campaign

Your AI-generated campaign is now ready for final checks (sequence, leads, settings) before you click Launch inside the campaign.

Troubleshooting

Issue: AI-generated leads aren't relevant

Fix:

  • Go back and refine your ICP (be more specific about industry, company size, location)

  • Edit personas to target more specific job roles

  • Remove irrelevant leads manually during the review step

Issue: Enrichment didn't find emails/phones for many leads

Fix:

  • This is normalβ€”not all leads have publicly available contact data

  • Enrichment success rates vary by industry and region (typically 60-80%)

  • You can manually add missing contact info or remove leads without data

Issue: AI-generated messaging doesn't sound like my brand

Fix:

  • Customize the messaging in the Sequence editor after generation

  • Edit your company description and value proposition to be more specific

  • Use the AI output as a starting point and rewrite sections in your voice

Issue: Campaign generated but I want to start over

Fix:

  • Delete the campaign (three dots β†’ Delete)

  • Start a new AI-generated campaign with refined inputs

  • Or keep the campaign and manually replace the sequence with a template

Optimization Tips

Be specific with pain points: The more specific your pain point selection, the more targeted your AI-generated messaging will be.

Review every step before launching: AI is good, but not perfect. Always review leads, messaging, and sequence structure before launching.

Start with email-only for testing: Use the email-only strategy first to test messaging and targeting. Add LinkedIn/phone later if results are strong.

Edit messaging to match your voice: AI-generated copy is a starting point. Customize it to sound like your brand before launching.

Use multiple personas: If targeting several roles, create separate campaigns for each persona rather than combining them. This keeps messaging focused.

Check enrichment credits before enriching: Lead enrichment uses credits. Check your balance in Settings to avoid running out mid-campaign.

Save successful ICPs as templates: Once you find an ICP that works well, document it so you can reuse similar criteria for future AI-generated campaigns.

Combine AI with manual tweaks: Use AI to do 80% of the work (lead sourcing, structure), then spend 20% of your time refining for maximum impact.
