By the end of this tutorial, you’ll know how to generate a follow-up email from a completed call, change the email language, edit the draft in the embedded composer, send it directly, and create a follow-up task from the call workflow.
Following up quickly after a call helps you keep momentum while the conversation is still fresh. With the Follow-up feature, you can turn call insights into a ready-to-send email in one click instead of writing from scratch.
Important: AI follow-up generation is available only for calls that are at least 30 seconds long.
Why this matters
Manual post-call emails slow reps down and often lead to missed follow-ups. AI-generated follow-ups help you respond faster, stay accurate to the conversation, and make it easier to review, edit, and send a polished next-step email.
Prerequisites
You should already know how to access your Calls workspace.
You should already have completed a recorded call that lasted at least 30 seconds.
You should already have email sending set up in your workspace if you want to send the follow-up immediately.
Core lesson — Step-by-step workflow
Phase 1: Open the completed call
Go to your calls list and open the call record.
Navigate to Calls from the left sidebar, then select the call you want to review. This opens the call modal, where summaries, transcripts, and follow-up actions are available.
Phase 2: Generate a follow-up from the call modal
Find the Suggested follow-up section and generate the email.
In the call modal, open the Call insights tab and scroll to Suggested follow-up. Click Generate follow-up to create an AI draft based on the call transcript and insights. This is the fastest way to produce a subject line and body without writing manually.Review the generated email and choose the right language.
After generation, the follow-up appears directly in the call modal. You can use the language dropdown to switch the output language, and use the refresh icon to regenerate the content if needed. This is useful when you want the message to match the contact’s language or when you want a different draft version.Regenerate the follow-up if you want a new variation.
Click the refresh icon beside the language selector to generate another version of the email. This helps when the first draft is close, but you want improved wording or a different angle before sending.
Phase 3: Edit or send the email
Choose whether to send immediately or open the composer.
If the draft looks good, you can send it right away. If you want more control, click Open to edit to launch the embedded composer, which works like the regular mail composer. This is best when you need to personalize the wording, review the subject, or add recipients.Edit the message with full composer tools.
In edit mode, you can update the sender, adjust the subject, rewrite the body, add Cc recipients, and use the standard formatting and content tools available in the composer. This gives you the same flexibility as a normal email draft while keeping the AI-generated starting point.Send the follow-up.
Once you’re satisfied with the content, click Send follow-up. This lets you act immediately while the context of the call is still clear, which improves response speed and consistency.
Phase 4: Create a follow-up task from the call task workflow
Enable automatic follow-up task creation while handling the call task.
From the call task view, turn on Auto-generate a follow-up email task. When enabled, Lemlist creates a follow-up task for the user who made the call, along with the AI-generated suggestion. This is helpful when you do not want to send the email immediately but still want a clear next action captured for later.Review the created follow-up task from the call modal.
After task creation, the follow-up appears in the call modal under Follow-up task. This gives you a visible reminder tied to the call record, so the next step stays connected to the original conversation.
Practical application
A simple, effective workflow for reps is:
Complete a discovery or demo call lasting more than 30 seconds.
Open the call modal immediately after the conversation.
Generate the AI follow-up and review the proposed next steps.
Either send it right away or open it in the composer to personalize it.
If you are not ready to send, create a follow-up task so nothing gets missed.
Example use case: After a positive call, a rep generates a follow-up email that summarizes the discussion, confirms agreed next steps, and sends it within minutes. If the contact needs a more tailored message or internal stakeholders copied, the rep opens the draft in the embedded composer, updates the wording, adds Cc recipients, and sends from there.
Best practices
Generate the email right after the call so the context is still fresh.
Review the draft before sending, especially for names, commitments, and timing.
Use the language selector when your contact prefers a different language.
Open to edit for higher-value deals where extra personalization can improve replies.
Use follow-up tasks when the email should be sent later or by the call owner after internal review.
Troubleshooting & pitfalls
Issue: The Generate follow-up button is missing or unavailable
Root cause: The call is shorter than the minimum AI threshold.
Fix:
Check the call duration in the call record.
Make sure the call lasted at least 30 seconds.
Try again with a qualifying completed call.
Issue: The generated draft is not in the right language
Root cause: The default generation language does not match your intended follow-up language.
Fix:
Use the language dropdown in the follow-up section.
Select the correct language.
Regenerate the draft if needed for a new version in that language.
Issue: The draft is good, but not ready to send as-is
Root cause: AI created a solid first draft, but you need more personalization.
Fix:
Click Open to edit.
Adjust the subject and body.
Add Cc recipients or other formatting before sending.
Issue: A rep forgot to send the follow-up after the call
Root cause: The email was not sent immediately and no reminder existed.
Fix:
Turn on Auto-generate a follow-up email task in the call task workflow.
Review the created task in the call modal.
Use the task as the tracked next action.
Summary
The Follow-up feature helps reps move from conversation to action in just a few clicks. For qualifying calls of at least 30 seconds, you can generate an AI email from the call modal, switch languages, edit in a full embedded composer, send directly, or create a follow-up task so no next step is lost.
