Learning Objective
By the end of this tutorial, you'll know how to connect your SiteGround email to lemlist using SMTP/IMAP (manual) configuration, troubleshoot common connection issues, and verify your setup so you can start sending campaigns.
Why This Matters
Connecting your SiteGround professional email with lemlist lets you send from your own domain while using lemlist for multichannel outreach. When the connection is correctly set up (especially IMAP), lemlist can detect replies and automatically stop follow-ups, which helps protect deliverability and improves the prospect experience.
Prerequisites
Before starting this tutorial, ensure you have:
An active SiteGround hosting account with email service enabled
Your SiteGround email credentials (full email address and password)
Access to your lemlist account (see Getting Started Pt. 1: The Technical Setup)
Basic understanding of creating campaigns in lemlist (see Getting Started Pt. 2: Launch Your First Campaign)
Core Lesson: Step-by-Step Workflow
Phase 1: Open lemlist email connection settings
Step 1: Navigate to Settings
Click your profile (bottom-left) and select Settings. This opens your account configuration area, where email connections are managed.
Step 2: Go to Sending settings and start a new connection
In the Settings panel, open Sending settings, make sure youâre in the Email section, then click Connect email address.
Step 3: Confirm the âconnect multiple email addressesâ screen
Review the guidance and click Accept and continue.
Step 4: Choose the manual provider option
In Select your email provider, click Connect next to Other email provider (SMTP/IMAP).
Step 5: Open Advanced settings
In the login popup, click Advanced settings to enter SMTP/IMAP details manually.
Phase 2: Configure SiteGround SMTP/IMAP
Step 6: Enter your SMTP (outgoing) and IMAP (incoming) settings
In the Email provider window, fill in the fields below and then click Save changes.
SMTP settings (Outgoing mail)
Login: Your full SiteGround email address (e.g., [email protected])
Password: Your SiteGround email password
Server address:mail.yourdomain.com (replace yourdomain.com with your domain)
Port: 465
SSL: Enabled
IMAP settings (Incoming mail)
Login: Your full SiteGround email address
Password: Your SiteGround email password
Server address:mail.yourdomain.com
Port: 993
SSL: Enabled
IMAP is required for reply detection (so lemlist can stop follow-ups when someone replies) and for tracking replies inside campaign reports.
Phase 3: Alternative server address (if the default fails)
Step 7: Use SiteGroundâs alternative server format if needed
If mail.yourdomain.com doesnât work, try:
secureXXX.sgcpanel.com (replace XXX with your hosting server number).
To find your server number in SiteGround:
Log in to your SiteGround account
Go to Site Tools > Email > Accounts
Check the server information under Mail Configuration
Example: If your hosting server is siteground164.com, your server address will be secure164.sgcpanel.com.
Phase 4: Verify deliverability settings
Step 8: Check your DNS records (recommended)
After connecting, go to Account health, then open the DNS health tab to review your domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, and DMARC).
Select the email address you connected (if needed) to display its DNS checks and results.
Confirm that your checks for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are passing (or review any flagged items and fix them in your DNS provider). Learn more: DNS Setup for DKIM, SPF and DMARC.
Practical Application / Real-Life Example
Example: B2B Sales Team Configuration
Sarah, a sales manager, connected her [email protected] SiteGround email to lemlist using manual SMTP/IMAP. Her configuration:
Server: mail.techcompany.com
SMTP Port: 465 (SSL enabled)
IMAP Port: 993 (SSL enabled)
After the connection, she created a 4-step multichannel sequence:
LinkedIn profile visit
Connection request with a personalized note
Initial email with
and{{firstName}}variables{{companyName}}Follow-up email 3 days later
Result: higher reply rates compared to single-channel outreach, thanks to better timing across multiple touchpoints.
Try It Yourself Checklist:
â Test the connection by sending a message to yourself and replying
â Set up your email signature using the
variable{{signature}}â Configure your Custom Tracking Domain for link tracking
â Start with 20â30 emails/day, then gradually increase
Troubleshooting & Pitfalls
Issue: Connection failed (authentication error)
Root cause: Wrong login/password (or not using the full email address)
Fix:
Use the full email address as the login (for both SMTP and IMAP)
Confirm the password by logging into SiteGround webmail
Remove any leading/trailing spaces
Issue: Server connection timeout
Root cause: Incorrect server address, port, or SSL setting
Fix:
Try the alternative server format: secureXXX.sgcpanel.com
Confirm SMTP port 465 with SSL and IMAP port 993 with SSL
Issue: Emails donât send after connecting
Root cause: Missing/incorrect DNS authentication records (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) or domain reputation issues
Fix:
Set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC in SiteGround
Wait 24â48 hours for DNS propagation
Verify your DNS status in lemlist Account health â DNS health
Issue: Replies arenât detected
Root cause: IMAP not configured correctly
Fix:
Confirm IMAP port is 993 and SSL is enabled
Send yourself an email, reply to it, and verify lemlist detects the reply
Issue: SSL/certificate errors
Root cause: Server address doesnât match the certificate, or SSL settings/ports are incorrect
Fix:
Verify the correct server hostname in SiteGround Mail Configuration (default or secureXXX)
Re-check ports and SSL are enabled (SMTP 465, IMAP 993)
If your provider supports it, try SMTP with TLS on port 587 (only if required by your server settings)
