How to add and manage unsubscribe links

Learn how to add an unsubscribe link to your emails for legal compliance, improved deliverability, and building trust with your prospects.

Learning Objective

By the end of this guide, you'll know how to add an unsubscribe link to your campaign emails, customize the unsubscribe text, and understand what happens when leads click it. You'll also learn how to manually unsubscribe leads or variables, and how to remove manually added unsubscribe entries when needed.

Why This Matters

Unsubscribe links are legally required and protect your sender reputation. Laws like GDPR and CAN-SPAM mandate easy opt-out options in cold emails; failing to include them risks fines and penalties. Beyond compliance, unsubscribe links reduce spam complaints, protect deliverability, build trust with prospects, and show professionalism. An unsubscribe link isn't optional, it's essential for effective, respectful outreach.

Prerequisites

Before you start:

  • A campaign with at least one email step created

  • Basic familiarity with the email editor

How to Add an Unsubscribe Link

Step 1: Open your campaign

Go to Campaigns and open the campaign where you want to add the unsubscribe link.

Open the Campaigns page and select a campaign

Step 2: Write your unsubscribe text

In the email editor, write the text where you want the unsubscribe link.

Typical placement: Right before your signature at the bottom of the email.

Text options:

  • Simple: "Unsubscribe"

  • Standard: "Click here to unsubscribe"

  • Creative: "Not interested? No problem—click here to unsubscribe"

  • Friendly: "In case you didn't like my joke, click here so I won't email you again. I still think it was a good joke though... 😔"

💡 Placement matters: Bottom of email after the main content but before the signature is standard and expected.

Step 3: Highlight the unsubscribe text

Select the word or sentence where you want the unsubscribe link attached.

Example: Highlight "unsubscribe" in "Not interested? Click here to unsubscribe."

Step 4: Insert the unsubscribe link

Click + Add, then select Add unsubscribe link.

Click Add and choose Add unsubscribe link in the email editor

Verification: The text should now appear as a hyperlink inside the email editor.

What Happens When a Lead Clicks Unsubscribe

When a lead clicks the unsubscribe link, lemlist automatically:

Adds the lead to the Unsubscribe list - The lead is permanently marked as unsubscribed across your entire lemlist account.

Stops the current campaign - The campaign immediately stops for that lead.

Stops all other campaigns - If the lead is active in other campaigns, those campaigns also stop immediately.

Blocks future campaigns - You cannot add this lead to future campaigns unless the unsubscribe was added manually and later removed.

⚠️ Permanent action: If a lead clicked the unsubscribe link themselves, that unsubscribe should be treated as permanent for compliance reasons.

Manually Unsubscribe Leads or Variables

You can manually add entries to the Unsubscribe list without someone clicking a link. This is useful for excluding specific people, entire domains, phone numbers, or LinkedIn URLs from all campaigns and channels.

Step 1: Go to Settings

Click your avatar in the bottom-left corner, then select Settings.

Open the avatar menu and click Settings

Step 2: Open Unsubscribe variables

In Settings, open Unsubscribe, then click Unsubscribe variables.

Open Unsubscribe and click Unsubscribe variables

Step 3: Add variables to unsubscribe

In the modal, paste the values you want to unsubscribe, one per line, then click Unsubscribe variables to confirm.

Paste unsubscribe variables into the modal

Supported variable types include:

Entire domains: @competitor.com

Phone numbers: +12025550123

💡 Tip: Domains must start with @ when added through Unsubscribe variables.

Step 4: Remove manually unsubscribed entries

Key difference: Entries you add manually can be removed later if needed.

To find manually added unsubscribes, open Unsubscribes types... and select User.

Filter unsubscribe entries by User

Then select one or more rows using the checkboxes and click Remove variables.

Select unsubscribe entries and click Remove variables

⚠️ Reminder: Only manually added unsubscribe entries can be removed. Unsubscribes triggered by recipients opting out should be respected for compliance reasons.

Best Practices

Always include unsubscribe links - Required in every campaign email.

Place the link at the bottom - After the email content and near the signature is standard.

Make it visible - Don't hide unsubscribe links in tiny font or match the background colour.

Keep text clear - "Unsubscribe" or "Click here to unsubscribe" works well.

Respect unsubscribes immediately - Lemlist handles this automatically.

Use manual unsubscribes strategically - Helpful for domains, phone numbers, and LinkedIn URLs you never want to contact.

Review the unsubscribe list regularly - High unsubscribe rates can signal messaging issues.

Troubleshooting

Issue: Unsubscribe link not appearing in sent emails

Root cause: The unsubscribe link was not inserted before launch.

Fix: Edit the email step, highlight your unsubscribe text, click + Add, then choose Add unsubscribe link. Save the campaign. Already-sent emails won't update, but future emails will.

Issue: Need to manually block several contacts at once

Root cause: You want to exclude multiple emails, domains, phone numbers, or LinkedIn URLs in bulk.

Fix: Go to Settings → Unsubscribe, click Unsubscribe variables, paste one value per line, and confirm.

Issue: Need to remove a manually added unsubscribe

Root cause: The entry was added manually and should no longer be blocked.

Fix: Go to Settings → Unsubscribe, filter Unsubscribes types to User, select the entry, and click Remove variables.

Issue: Want to exclude an entire company from campaigns

Root cause: You need to block the domain, not just one email address.

Fix: Add the domain in Unsubscribe variables using the format @companyname.com.
