Integrating AI technology into your outreach strategy can dramatically improve the performance and personalization of your campaigns.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of connecting your OpenAI account to lemlist and activating the powerful AI variable feature.

To begin, head to the Integrations section of your lemlist account and connect your OpenAI. Once connected, you'll be able to start using AI-powered variables to craft smarter, more dynamic messages—automatically.

2. Head to the Integrations section and click on Connect next to Open AI
You will be then guided through the set up process:

1. Add Credits to Your OpenAI Key
To use the OpenAI API, you’ll first need to purchase credits. Here’s how:
Go to the OpenAI billing page: OpenAI Billing Overview
Add a payment method: Ensure you have a valid payment option linked.
Purchase credits: Click on "Buy Credits" to add funds to your account.
Add credits as needed: Make sure your balance is sufficient to cover your anticipated usage.
❗️❗️❗️ Important Note: If your usage page shows $0.00/$20 limit, it indicates that you can spend a maximum of $20, not that you have $20 available. Always check your billing page for your actual balance.
2. Use Your Key in lemlist
Now that you have credits, you can integrate your API key into lemlist:
Enter your OpenAI API key: Go to the settings in lemlist and input your key.
Follow the tutorial: we have provided a step-by-step guide for adding your key. Alternatively, you can access your API keys directly through OpenAI API Keys.
Once you’ve connected OpenAI, you’re ready to start using AI variables in your lemlist campaigns.
👉 Head over to the campaign where you'd like to use this feature, open the Editor section, and click the "+" icon next to your variables. From there, simply select the option to create an AI Column.
This allows you to generate dynamic, AI-powered content directly within your campaign—boosting personalization and engagement with ease.
✨ Customize Your AI Variable and Unlock Powerful Automation
Once you select "Create AI Column," you'll be prompted to create a new variable.
Feel free to name it however you'd like. From there, you can use custom AI prompts to do things like:
Clean and format dates
Generate personalized icebreakers
Pull in company descriptions
