How to Keep Follow-Up Emails in the Same Thread

Learn how to create follow-up emails with blank subjects to keep them in the same thread.

Updated over a week ago

Hey lemlister! 👋

Want your follow-up emails to appear under the same thread as your first email?
Here’s how to make sure all your messages stay perfectly grouped in your recipient’s inbox.

The Key Rule

To keep follow-ups threaded with your first email, leave the subject line blank for every step after Step 1 in your sequence.

When the subject is empty, lemlist automatically reuses the original subject from the first email — so all replies appear under the same conversation thread. 💬

✅ No need to add “Re:” or “Fwd:” manually — lemlist handles it for you.

What You’ll See

  • In your recipient’s inbox → all follow-ups appear in one clean thread.

  • In your Outbox / lemlist dashboard → they may show as separate messages due to internal tracking, but don’t worry - recipients see them as a single conversation.

What to Check Before Sending

  1. Leave the subject field completely empty in preview mode for all follow-ups.

  2. Use the same sender for each follow-up to the same lead - changing senders can break threading.

  3. Avoid adding CCs or BCCs, even to yourself - this can cause some providers (like Gmail or Outlook) to split the thread.

💡 Quick Tip

If you don’t want emails to be grouped together - for example, if you prefer each follow-up to appear as a new conversation, just add a unique subject line for each step.

You can also test threading behavior by sending yourself a campaign with different sender/recipient combinations to confirm how it displays in your inbox.
