Learning Objective
By the end of this tutorial, you’ll know how to add a LinkedIn Voice Message step to a lemlist campaign, choose how the audio is created (record or upload), and personalize the voice message per lead in the Review section.
Why This Matters
Voice messages add tone and personality that text can’t, helping you stand out and build stronger first-touch connections. Used thoughtfully, they can increase engagement by making your outreach feel more human and intentional.
Prerequisites
You have a campaign created (or you’re ready to create one).
Your LinkedIn account is connected to lemlist.
Core Lesson: Step-by-Step Workflow
Phase 1: Add the Voice message step
1) Add a Voice message step to your campaign
In your campaign sequence builder, click + to add a new step, then select Voice message. This creates a LinkedIn Voice Message step in your sequence.
Phase 2: Configure the sender and audio type
2) Choose the LinkedIn sender for this step
Select the LinkedIn account that will send the voice message. Because voice messages are personal, this step is sent from a single sender (multi-sender isn’t available for this step).
3) Choose whether to record or upload your voice message
In the Voice message step, decide how you want to add the audio:
Record directly in lemlist, or
Upload a pre-recorded audio file.
To record, click Start recording. To upload, click Choose a file (or drag and drop the audio file).
If you record inside lemlist, select the correct audio input (microphone) first, then record your message. Voice messages can be up to 1 minute.
Rules for uploading an audio file
Max 20MB
Max 1min00s
Supported file type: .wav, .mp3, .m4a, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .wma
Optional: Add an alternate invite message if you’re not connected
If you are not connected to a lead, you can add an alternate message that will be sent with the invitation message.
Phase 3: Personalize voice messages per lead (Review)
4) Personalize a voice message for a specific lead
To make your outreach even more relevant, you can replace the default voice message for a specific lead in the Review section. Select a lead, then click Personalize on the Voice message step.
Then record a custom message for that lead (or upload a different audio file).
After saving, you can keep the personalized voice message for that lead, redo it, or delete it and switch back to the original (campaign-level) voice message.
Practical Application / Real-Life Example
If you’re targeting prospects who get many LinkedIn messages, try using a short voice note as a pattern interrupt:
Day 1: Connect (with a short invite message if needed).
Day 2: Send a Voice message referencing a specific detail (role, recent post, company update).
Day 4: Follow up with a short chat message or email to propose a next step.
Keep voice messages concise (15–30 seconds is often enough) and end with a simple question to make replying easy.
Troubleshooting & Pitfalls
Issue: I don’t see the Voice message step
Root cause: You’re not in the campaign sequence builder or the LinkedIn sending options aren’t available.
Fix: Go back to the campaign Sequence builder and add a new step again. Make sure your LinkedIn account is connected.
Issue: My microphone isn’t recording the right input
Root cause: The wrong audio input is selected, or browser permissions are blocked.
Fix: Select the correct microphone in the audio input dropdown, and confirm your browser has permission to use the microphone.
Issue: My audio file won’t upload
Root cause: File is too large, too long, or in an unsupported format.
Fix: Verify it’s under 20MB, under 1:00, and in one of the supported formats (.wav, .mp3, .m4a, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .wma).
