You can add a new step or a condition to a campaign after it has launched. You don't need to pause the campaign, duplicate it, or move leads to a new one. The new step reaches every lead that hasn't passed that point in the sequence yet.
⚠️ This feature is in beta and is not enabled for every team yet. If you can't add a step to a launched campaign, your team doesn't have access yet.
Limitations
Leads who already passed the point where you add the step do not receive it.
Leads who already finished the sequence do not continue to the new step.
You cannot drag and drop steps to reorder them in a running campaign.
You cannot turn a running campaign into an A/B test sequence.
A new step is not applied until you confirm it and save your changes.
Prerequisites
Your team has access to the beta.
The campaign is launched.
Phase 1: Add the step
Step 1: Open the sequence
Go to Campaigns, open the running campaign, then open the Sequence tab.
Step 2: Choose where to add the step
To add a step between two existing steps, click the + between them. To add a step at the end of the sequence, click Add step.
Step 3: Select a step or a condition
Choose the step type or the condition you want to add. It appears in the sequence in a draft state.
Step 4: Set up the step
Fill in the step settings and content. The Review button stays blocked until the step is valid, so fix any errors on the step first.
Phase 2: Confirm and save the step
Step 1: Confirm the step
In the step panel, click Confirm. A window explains that the step will go to the leads that haven't passed this part of the sequence yet. Confirm to continue.
Step 2: Save your changes
At the bottom of the sequence, the pending changes bar shows how many changes you made (for example, 1 pending change). Click Save changes, check the number under New steps in the Save your changes window, then click Save changes.
✅ Verify: the new step shows an Added label in the sequence. Hover over it to see Added by {user name} on {date}.
💡 If you leave the step or the campaign before you confirm and save, a window asks whether you want to leave and lose your changes. To undo your changes on one step before saving, use the reset button on that step.
Phase 3: Which leads receive the new step
Leads that haven't reached that point yet receive the new step when they get there.
Leads waiting on a later step are moved onto the new step when you insert it before their current position.
Leads that already passed that point do not receive the new step. It is not shown in their sequence.
In the launch panel and the other lead sequence views, the new step is listed for each lead that hasn't passed that point yet, with the same Added label and hover text.
Phase 4: Add or reorder condition branches
In a running campaign, you can also add condition branches and reorder them.
Phase 5: Step numbers and reporting
Adding a step changes the step numbers for some leads but not for others. A lead who passed that point before you added the step keeps the old numbering. A lead who receives the new step counts it.
Lead panel: the activity for a sent step shows the step number for that lead. The same step can be step 3 for one lead and step 4 for another.
Overview statistics: the lead name and step number shown are the actual step number for that lead.
Reporting by step: all steps are listed. Steps added while the campaign was running are marked with an icon.
Phase 6: Add a step through the API or lemAgent
You can also add a step to a launched campaign through the lemlist API or lemAgent. For lemAgent, see Use lemAgent to prospect, build campaigns, and analyze results.
Example: add a LinkedIn touch between two emails
Scenario: your campaign has three email steps. Some leads already received email 2, others are waiting for it, and you want a LinkedIn profile visit before email 2.
Step 1: In the Sequence tab, click the + between email 1 and email 2, then choose the LinkedIn step.
Step 2: Set up the step, click Confirm, then click Save changes.
Result: leads waiting for email 2 get the LinkedIn step first. Leads who already received email 2 continue without it.
Troubleshooting
Issue: I can't add a step to my launched campaign
Root cause: your team doesn't have access to the beta yet.
Fix: contact lemlist support to ask about access.
Issue: The Review button is blocked
Root cause: the new step has errors and isn't valid yet.
Fix: open the step, fix the errors shown on it, then click Confirm.
Issue: Some leads didn't receive the new step
Root cause: those leads had already passed that point in the sequence or had finished it when you saved the step.
Fix: open the lead's sequence to check where they were. If you need those leads to receive the content, contact them separately or add them to another campaign.
Issue: The same step has a different number for two leads
Root cause: one lead passed that point before the step was added, the other received the added step.
Fix: nothing to fix. Step numbers in the lead panel and overview statistics are per lead.
If your case is different
If you want to change the content of a step that already exists, see Edit an active campaign.
If you want to stop sending a step in a running campaign, see Skip a campaign step for all leads.
If your campaign is still in Draft and you want to change the step order, see Reorder steps in your sequence.
